Graduation season is here. High school seniors from Johnson, Reagan, and Clark are booking hair appointments. UTSA, Trinity, and UIW graduates are scheduling blowouts. Moms, aunts, and grandmas are all getting done up for the big day. Your chair is full…but what happens after May?
Most salons treat graduation appointments as one-time transactions. The smart ones treat them as the beginning of a relationship. Here’s how to turn graduation season into a year-round client pipeline.
Capture Every New Client’s Information
When a new face sits in your chair for graduation hair, don’t let them leave without their email, phone number, and name in your system. Hand them a quick signup form or have your front desk collect it during check-in. Even better…use a digital intake form on a tablet.
Every new client who walks in for graduation is a potential regular. But only if you can reach them again.
The Follow-Up Text That Changes Everything
Two days after their appointment, send a text: “Hey [Name]! Hope graduation was amazing. We loved having you…here’s 15% off your next visit whenever you’re ready. Just mention this text.” It takes 30 seconds to set up as an automated message and it works shockingly well.
A salon near North Star Mall started doing post-appointment follow-up texts and saw a 28% return rate from first-time graduation clients. Without the text, the return rate was under 5%. We built on this idea in our Mother’s Day retention guide for salons, which includes more automated follow-up strategies.
Create a “New Graduate” Package
Build a package specifically for recent graduates who are entering the workforce, starting college, or beginning their adult life. “Professional Ready Package: haircut, color touch-up, and brow shaping for $75.” Position it as helping them look their best for job interviews, college orientation, or their first professional headshot.
Promote this package on social media and through email to every graduation client you served. It gives them a reason to come back within a few weeks rather than waiting months.
Ask for Reviews While the Experience Is Fresh
Graduation appointments are emotional and memorable. People are happy, excited, and looking great. That’s the perfect moment to ask for a Google review. Have a QR code ready at your station or send the link via text right after their appointment.
“We’d love to hear about your experience! Leave us a review and help other San Antonio clients find us.” Happy graduation clients leave enthusiastic reviews…the kind that attract more new clients year-round.
Build a Referral Loop
Graduation season brings groups. The graduate, their mom, their friends…often in the same week. If one person in the group had a great experience, give them a referral card: “Bring a friend and you both get $10 off your next service.”
Salons thrive on word-of-mouth, especially in tight-knit San Antonio communities. A referral from a friend is worth more than any ad you could run. Make sure your online presence supports those referrals – our Google Business Profile guide for beauty salons ensures you’re easy to find when someone shares your name.
Think Beyond May
The salons that grow aren’t the ones that get busy during graduation and then slow down in June. They’re the ones that use every busy season as a launching pad for ongoing relationships. Capture the data, follow up with care, and give people a reason to return. As summer slows down, a strong website can keep bookings steady heading into the back-to-school rush.
