The holiday rush is over. Your staff finally got a day off. And now you’re staring at January wondering how to keep tables full when everyone’s on a budget and swearing off queso (temporarily, of course).
Here’s the thing: people are still eating out. They’re just being pickier about where. And most of them start by pulling out their phone and searching “restaurants near me.” If your spot on Broadway or down by the Pearl doesn’t show up, you’re invisible.
Let’s fix that.
Make Sure Google Knows You Exist (and You’re Open)
This sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many San Antonio restaurants have outdated Google Business Profiles. Wrong hours. Old menus. A phone number that rings to nobody.
Start the year by logging into your Google Business Profile and updating everything:
- Hours, including any post-holiday changes
- Menu link…if you’ve got a new seasonal menu, point to it
- Photos…fresh shots of your dining room, your best plates, your patio on a mild January evening
- Description…mention your neighborhood. “Family-owned Tex-Mex on the Southside” tells Google and customers exactly what you are and where you are.
Get Specific With Your Keywords
“Restaurant in San Antonio” is broad. You’re competing with thousands of places. Instead, think about what makes you different and how people actually search:
- “Best breakfast tacos near Alamo Heights”
- “Late night food Southtown San Antonio”
- “Dog-friendly restaurant Stone Oak”
Work these kinds of phrases into your website…your homepage, your about page, even your blog if you have one. Google connects the dots between what people search and the words on your site.
Ask for Reviews (Yes, Again)
Reviews are rocket fuel for local SEO. A restaurant with 200 reviews and a 4.5-star rating will outrank one with 30 reviews and a 5-star rating almost every time.
Make it easy. Print a QR code on your receipts. Train your servers to mention it: “If you loved the enchiladas, we’d really appreciate a Google review.” Most happy customers are willing…they just need a nudge.
Respond to every review, too. Even the one-star ones. Especially the one-star ones. Google notices engagement. We covered how to manage your Google Business Profile during the busiest season in our guide to optimizing your restaurant’s profile for the holidays.
Plan Your Content Calendar for Q1
January is the perfect time to think ahead. What’s coming up?
- San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo kicks off in February. Are you running a rodeo special?
- Valentine’s Day…do you offer a prix fixe menu or reservation packages?
- Fiesta prep starts earlier than you think.
Write a blog post or social media content around each event. Tie it back to your restaurant. This gives Google fresh content to index and gives customers a reason to choose you. And when summer rolls around, email marketing can keep your tables full during the slow months.
Start the Year Visible
Local SEO isn’t a one-time project. It’s an ongoing habit. But if you set a strong foundation in January, you’ll see the results compound all year.
