When a homeowner in Alamo Heights needs a bathroom remodel or a business in the Rim needs a commercial buildout, they search Google. And the first thing they see isn’t your website…it’s your Google Business Profile.
Three businesses appear in the Map Pack with their photos, ratings, and contact info. If you’re one of those three, you’re getting the call. If you’re not, someone else is.
For construction companies, your GBP is often the first impression. Let’s make sure it’s a good one.
Choose the Right Categories
Google lets you set a primary category and additional categories. This tells Google what searches to show you for.
Your primary category should be your main service…“General Contractor,” “Remodeling Contractor,” “Roofing Contractor,” etc.
Add secondary categories for everything else you do:
- Home Builder
- Bathroom Remodeler
- Kitchen Remodeler
- Deck Builder
- Concrete Contractor
Be thorough. Each category is a chance to appear in a different search.
Photos Are Your Portfolio
For construction, photos aren’t optional…they’re everything. Homeowners want to see your work before they call you.
Upload liberally:
- Before and after shots of completed projects
- In-progress photos that show craftsmanship
- Your crew at work (builds trust and shows you’re a real, active company)
- Your vehicles and equipment (branded trucks signal professionalism)
Aim for at least 20-30 high-quality photos. Update monthly with recent projects. Google favors profiles with fresh, frequently updated photo galleries. Pairing strong GBP photos with local SEO for fall project pipelines keeps leads flowing year-round.
Collect Reviews Aggressively
In construction, reviews are the difference between getting on a bid list and getting ignored. A 4.7-star rating with 80+ reviews tells a homeowner you’re established and trusted.
After every completed project, ask for a review. Send a text with a direct link to your Google review page. Make the ask specific: “If you’re happy with how the patio turned out, we’d really appreciate a Google review.”
When you get reviews, respond to every one:
- “Thanks for the kind words, Mr. and Mrs. Perez! We loved working on your Monte Vista kitchen.”
- “We appreciate the feedback and take your concerns seriously. We’d like to discuss this further…please call us at…”
Use the Q&A Feature
Your GBP has a Q&A section where anyone can ask questions. Don’t wait for strangers to answer…seed it yourself.
Add common questions and answer them:
- “Do you offer free estimates?” → “Yes, we provide free in-home estimates for all residential projects in the greater San Antonio area.”
- “Are you licensed and insured?” → “Yes, we’re fully licensed and insured. Happy to provide documentation upon request.”
- “What areas do you serve?” → “We serve San Antonio, Boerne, Bulverde, New Braunfels, and surrounding communities.”
This saves you time on phone calls and builds confidence before someone even contacts you. When the holidays approach, email marketing can help fill your winter schedule and your website needs to be ready for Small Business Saturday inquiries too.
