You set up your Google Business Profile months ago…maybe even years ago. You uploaded some photos, added your hours, and moved on with running your shop.
Time for a reality check.
Pull up your profile right now. Is the phone number correct? Are the hours accurate for summer? Do the photos reflect what your store actually looks like today? If the answer to any of those is “I’m not sure,” you need this mid-year review.
Step 1: Audit Your Basic Information
Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard and verify:
- Business name…matches your signage and other listings exactly
- Address…correct and formatted consistently
- Phone number…rings to the right place
- Website URL…goes to your homepage (not a broken link or old domain)
- Hours…updated for summer (do you close early on Sundays? Open later on Saturdays?)
- Holiday hours…add upcoming closures for July 4th and any summer holidays
This takes 5 minutes and prevents lost customers who call a disconnected number or drive to a closed store.
Step 2: Refresh Your Photos
Photos are one of the biggest factors in whether someone clicks on your profile or scrolls past it.
Delete any photos that are:
- Blurry or low quality
- More than a year old
- Not representative of your current inventory or space
Upload new photos of:
- Your storefront (current season…not a holiday display from December)
- Your best-selling or newest products
- Your team
- The interior of your shop from a customer’s perspective
Google says businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks. That stat alone should motivate you.
Step 3: Check Your Reviews and Respond
Scroll through your recent reviews. Have you responded to all of them? For retail shops, reviews often mention specific products, staff members, or experiences. Your responses should acknowledge those specifics:
“So glad you loved the handmade candles, Maria! We just got a new batch of summer scents…hope to see you soon.”
This shows future customers that you’re attentive, personal, and engaged.
Also check for any negative reviews you might have missed. A thoughtful response to a complaint can actually improve your reputation. Building strong review habits now pays dividends when the holidays hit and customer retention becomes your biggest priority in Q4.
Step 4: Use Google Posts
If you haven’t posted on your GBP since you set it up, start now. Post about:
- New arrivals or restocks
- Summer sales or promotions
- Upcoming events (sidewalk sale, pop-up market, etc.)
- Behind-the-scenes content
Posts expire after 7 days, so aim for at least one per week. It signals to Google that your business is active.
