How to get recommended by ChatGPT in San Antonio

You asked ChatGPT for a company that does what you do, and it named three of your competitors instead of you. That gap can be closed, and the work involved is all things you can see and check. This page walks through the playbook I use. At the bottom, you can hand it to me instead.

How do AI assistants pick who to recommend?

They read the same web you can read. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers are built on search results, business listings, review sites, directories, news and industry articles, and the text on your own website. When someone asks for a recommendation, the assistant pulls together what those sources say and writes a short answer naming a few businesses.

If your business is described clearly and consistently in the places those systems read, you are a candidate to be named. If you are thin, inconsistent, or invisible, you are not. Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the practice of making sure you are present and described accurately in that source material.

The playbook: six steps to get your business on ChatGPT

This is the order I work in. It is the same order I would give you if you wanted to do it yourself.

  1. Fix the fundamentals on your own site

Write plain answers to the questions your customers ask, in plain sentences, on pages anyone can find. State clearly what you do, who you do it for, and where you do it. Add structured data so machines can read your business details without guessing, and use question-style headings so an assistant can lift a clean answer straight off the page.

  2. Make your Google Business Profile complete and active

Every field filled in, correct categories, real photos, current hours, services listed. Then keep reviews coming in steadily and answer them, including the unflattering ones. Your profile is one of the most heavily read descriptions of your business that exists, and you control almost all of it.

  3. Make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere

Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, and the major directories for your industry all get read. When those listings disagree about your suite number or your phone, you look like two half businesses instead of one whole one. Pick the exact format you want and enforce it across every listing.

  4. Get cited by other people

Local directories, the chamber, industry listicles, association member pages, reviews on B2B directories. AI systems weight corroboration more heavily than self-description, because anyone can claim anything on their own website. A dozen outside sources saying the same thing about you beats a hundred adjectives on your homepage.

  5. Publish content with numbers and specifics

AI answers quote concrete figures and clean definitional sentences, so write them. Timelines, service areas, what a project involves, what results you have produced. Vague, adjective-heavy pages give an assistant nothing to quote.

  6. Measure it

Once a month, open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and ask them the questions your buyers would ask. Write down whether you appear, who does appear, and how you are described. That is your scoreboard, and it costs you twenty minutes.

Why this is the same job as local SEO done properly

Look back at those six steps. Every one of them is something a good local SEO program already does. Clean site structure, a strong Google Business Profile, consistent listings, citations, useful content, honest measurement. AI visibility comes from search work done well, because the assistants read the results of that work.

I can show you this working on my own site. Ask an AI assistant about small business marketing in San Antonio and growmysmallbusiness.com comes back cited by name in the answer. I did not buy that placement. The same work I sell produced it, which is also why AI visibility is included in my Managed SEO instead of billed as its own line.

The client results follow the same pattern. After a relaunch for a boutique fitness studio, Google impressions rose 137 percent and website leads went from zero to an average of twelve a month. That is a search result and an AI-readiness result at the same time, because it came from the same set of fixes.

What nobody can promise you

No one can guarantee that ChatGPT will name your business. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something they do not control. These systems change their models, their sources, and their behavior on their own schedule, and two people asking the same question can get different answers.

What you can control is your presence in everything those assistants read. You can be accurately described on your own site, complete and reviewed on your profile, consistent across the directories, cited by third parties, and specific in your content. Do all of that and you are a legitimate candidate every time the question comes up. Skip it and you are not in the running. That is the deal as I understand it, and I will not pitch you a stronger one.

Who this matters for in San Antonio

It matters most if you sell something people research before they buy. Home services, medical and dental practices, law firms, accountants, gyms and studios, contractors, B2B service companies, anyone whose customers ask around before picking up the phone. Those are the questions people now type into an assistant instead of a search box.

It matters less if you win almost entirely on foot traffic or word of mouth in a tight radius, though your Google Business Profile still deserves attention. And it matters urgently if you have already run the search, seen your competitors listed, and found yourself missing. That gap does not close on its own.

Fair questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

No. There is no ad slot in a recommendation answer that you can buy. You earn a mention by being visible and consistent in the sources the assistant reads. Anyone offering to place you directly is misleading you.

How long does AI search optimization take?

Plan on months. Listing corrections and profile work show up fastest. Content, citations, and reviews build over a quarter or two, and AI answers tend to lag the underlying search improvements. Check monthly and judge the trend rather than any single answer.

Does this replace Google SEO?

No, it depends on it. AI assistants lean on search results, maps data, and review sites, so improving your standing in those places is what makes an AI mention possible. I do not run them as two projects. It is one job now.

How do I check whether AI mentions my business?

Ask the assistants directly. Write down the five questions a good customer would ask before hiring you, then run them through ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity once a month. Log who gets named and how they are described. That log tells you more than any dashboard.

Want me to run this for you?

I am one person in San Antonio, and I take on a limited number of clients so the work gets done. If you want the six steps above handled as part of ongoing SEO, or you want a straight answer about where you stand, send me a note. Tell me the question you asked ChatGPT and who it named instead of you, and I will tell you what I see.

No spam, and you can leave the list whenever you like.
